How a labour rate is built
A labour rate is not plucked from the air — it is the price that covers the cost of an hour of workshop time and adds a profit on top. Work it out in three steps.
1. Add up your yearly cost
Take the fully-loaded cost of each mechanic (wage + employer’s NI + pension) and add your fixed overheads — rent, rates, energy, insurance, equipment, software, marketing. For a lean two-bay shop on 2 mechanics at £32,000 each and £3,500/month of overheads, that is about £106,000 a year.
2. Divide by billable hours
Only count the hours you actually invoice, not the hours staff are on site. At 30 billable hours per mechanic per week over 46 working weeks, that is about 2,760 billable hours a year — a break-even rate of £38.41/hour. Charge that and you make nothing.
3. Add your margin
Add your target net profit margin on top. At 20% the same shop needs a recommended charge-out rate of £48.01/hour. Higher wages, more overheads or fewer billable hours all push this up — which is exactly why big-city and dealer rates run so much higher.
The rate most garages get wrong
The single most common mistake is charging close to break-even without realising it — matching “the garage down the road” instead of pricing from real cost. A £5/hour rise on 2,760 billable hours is £13,800 straight to the bottom line, with no extra work. Knowing your break-even is the difference between a busy workshop and a profitable one.
