How to send MOT reminders to customers (and win the repeat work)
24 June 2026 · 6 min read
Every car you MOT this year needs another one next year. If you remind the customer, the booking is usually yours. If you do not, they search online and might land at the garage down the road. MOT reminders are the cheapest, highest-return marketing an independent garage has — and most still do them by memory, or not at all.
Why reminders work so well
The customer already trusts you, you already have the car’s history, and the need is guaranteed and dated. Few marketing messages are that welcome or that timely. A reminder a couple of weeks before the due date lands as a helpful nudge, not a sales pitch.
The manual way (and why it slips)
You can keep a spreadsheet of registrations and expiry dates and work through it each month. It works right up until it is busy — which is always — and then a week gets skipped and a dozen cars quietly go elsewhere. Manual reminders depend on the one thing a working garage never has spare: admin time.
The automatic way
Better is software that knows each vehicle’s real MOT expiry and emails the customer automatically before it is due. The good setups:
- Pull the genuine MOT expiry from DVSA, so you are never working off a wrong date you typed last year.
- Send the reminder a sensible window ahead (a couple of weeks) with a clear way to book.
- Stop chasing once the car is booked, so customers are not nagged.
What a good reminder says
Keep it short and useful: the car, the due date, and a one-tap way to book. Friendly, branded with your garage name, no jargon. You are reminding a customer, not running an ad campaign.
Turn it on once, benefit all year
The whole point is that it runs without you. Set it up once and every car you see this year quietly becomes a booking next year. In Garage Desk you type the reg, it pulls the MOT date from DVSA, and the reminders go out on their own — try it free for 7 days and let the repeat work look after itself.
