How cost per mile is worked out
Your fuel cost per mile comes from two numbers: how far the car goes on a gallon (MPG) and what a gallon costs at the pump. Divide the price of a gallon by your MPG and you have the fuel cost of a single mile; multiply that by the trip distance for the total. Work out the fuel used per mile from your MPG, then multiply by the pump price. Because UK MPG uses imperial gallons, the calculator converts the price per litre to per gallon and divides by your MPG to give the fuel cost of one mile.
